CURATOR INTRODUCTION

Until recently, contemporary art practices from many parts of the world had escaped the attention of Western art centres.

Such neglected geographies included the “Middle East”: a vast area comprising many countries, histories, ethnicities, and cultures. Today, the art of this region has become globally visible.

Its artists, however, are neither fixed inside its territories nor permanently diasporic. Often on the move, they define themselves and the world according to their personal visions.

In Safar/Voyage—where “voyage” is the translation of its equivalent in Persian—sixteen Arab, Iranian, and Turkish artists are brought together in a visual odyssey, capturing moments of their journeys.
