That the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) is losing to the Taliban in southern Afghanistan is "a myth" according to Brigadier-General Denis Thompson, in an exclusive interview with Esprit de Corps.

The Canadian commander hit back at claims in the United States that unless 21,000 more American troops are sent to Afghanistan the "downward spiral" will continue and the war will be lost.

BGen Denis Thompson was the commander of Task Force Kandahar from May 14, 2008 to February 19, 2009.

"We are certainly taking our hits," he admitted, but denied this foretold a collapse in Afghanistan.

"I would also opine that if you are in the process of deploying 21,000 troops, there's that old expression 'every fire brigade needs a fire.' So there is a bit of painting the picture as black as possible in order to justify to the American public tha
